Divorces are devastating. They are a turning point in the lives of both the partners.
Waking up one day without the one person who mattered to you the most, the one you loved more than anything a few days ago, and realizing that he or she won’t be ever coming back in your life can be heart-breaking and lead to many sleepless nights.
It’s really hard to cope-up with breakups and even harder to deal with a divorce.
You end up thinking that nobody understands your situation, even though they might have experienced the same pain and emotions that you would be going through right now.
You are plagued by feelings of worthlessness, sadness, inferiority and lack of hope. This might be an indication that you are sinking or are already in the state of depression.
It might feel like the end of the universe. Although it may be difficult to imagine achieving previous feelings of happiness, you can take control of your depression and be on the road to recovery by increasing social support, changing your thinking, increasing your physical health, and coping healthfully.
Here are a few ways to help you get out of stress and depression caused by divorce-
-
ACCEPTANCE
The first step to get over divorce is to accept that it happened and that people tend to fall out of love almost as much as it is possible to fall in love.
Two people might be quite compatible at an earlier point of time but might not be able to find peace in each other’s company.
It is not only you who is going through all the heartbreak but many others who felt like you after a divorce and got over this feeling and achieved their goals.
-
AVOID ISOLATION
Reach out to your family members and friends. Try to spend lots of time with them. It’s better to spend some quality time with the people who are still in your life instead of being worried about the one who isn’t.
Open up to them about your feelings. Getting help from trustworthy people to overcome your isolation makes you stronger.
It’s okay to talk about what’s going on in your mind and what you are feeling. Tell people what they can do for you to help you feel better. If you ask, people will be willing to help. It is not a sign of weakness to reach out for help but a step only a strong human being can make.
-
YOU MATTER
Start taking steps for yourself. You are the only person who should matter for you now.
Imagine billions of cells working and fighting for your existence. They are there for you and you alone.
- Treat yourself well
- Start waking up early
- Go out for a brisk walk or run
- Start exercising and adopt a balanced diet
- Adopt a new hobby to occupy your mind
- Think positive
- Stay away from self-harming elements in your life
Your ultimate goal in your life should be to remain happy.
-
NOTHING IS PERFECT
Be realistic and avoid perfectionism.
Remember your recovery won’t be immediate. Everything takes time and so will this. There are no hacks to happiness.
Take small steps toward accomplishing your goals and they will seem much more achievable.
-
MEDITATE
Meditate for 20-30 minutes a day.
- Sit in a comfortable position in a quite environment with your back straight
- Close your eyes
- Relax and concentrate on your breathing
The mind is most efficient when it is in a relaxed state.
-
TALK TO A THERAPIST
A therapist can help you work through your issues. He or she can help educate you about your depression, which is an important component of recovery.
If you don’t believe in traditional therapy, then look for other modern options like music and art therapy.
-
HELP OTHERS
You should help others who might be facing the same problems as you. Helping others lets you see the problem through another perspective.
Engage yourself in social service work because sometimes making others happy and seeing them happy makes us happy, too.
Rome wasn’t built in a day. It took many years of hard work and effort. If the people would have given up hope because a wall did not stay up for long then nothing would have ever been created. Life is a rollercoaster ride. The ups are the good times we experience and the downs are the bad times that we go through. We wouldn’t have appreciated the ups if there had been no downs.
Your life is precious and there are many people who love you. These people care about you a lot and will always want to be by your side. You might not realize how important your life is but with time, you’ll know how much others are affected by your actions.
